Teaching is a very challenging profession! And if you do not have the fight in you to rise to the challenge it is time for you to go. I think this week has proven to be the most challenging week of my three year in education thus far.
Through the course of this week, I have seen tears, frustration, yelling, temper tantrums, pettiness, selfishness, and plenty other horrible attributes of a person. Professionalism seemed to lack from some people this week. Selfishness seemed to overcome some. When your heart is not in it for the children and you are not willing to better yourself for your students, what is your purpose of being in the classroom? Sometimes it is best to walk away. If your attitude is very lackadaisical, then it will reflect in your work. Most importantly, it will reflect in the students' performance. I can teach many things, but I can't make a person do their job; that's their choice.
Also this week, I've reflected on one major idea. It is amazing that when people aren't doing their jobs, it affects yours, especially as a teacher. It also affects the students. Everyone must do their part. If not then the results will be a domino effect. As a result, it put so much strain on the person that is trying to do his or her job. I have seen one fellow educator breakdown and cry. I have felt so frustrated that (for the lack of a better term) I was just over everything and everybody. I felt as if no one cared about me and yet I still am suppose to deliver my best.
My students constantly hear me tell them, your actions don't just affect you. As an adult, I think this is overlooked when it comes to ourselves. Ultimately, teaching is not for everyone. If you are not willing to think about how your actions will affect others, then you must go or change, which means truly reflecting about your practices. Recognize that at the end of the day, while other teachers may get upset, think about who is really suffering from selfish grown adults who are teachers...the students. This is not a profession you can go into with truly having a passion for remembering everything you do is about the children!
This week has been trying one and I feel like I been through a lot. Even more importantly, some students have been through a lot as well. At the end of the day...just do what you need to. It makes life so much easier! And at the end of the day, this job is not about you! If you feel lazy or are so, do us all a favor...just say " Bye Felicia" (if you seen a certain movie you will understand that phrase) and move on! Stop wasting everyone's time!
